A victory for common sense

NEWS STORY
13/05/2013

Hard to believe, but as Fernando Alonso celebrated winning his home Grand Prix for only the second time, jobsworths were preparing to punish him for a flag misdemeanour. Not any old flag mind you, but his national flag, la Rojigualda , the Spaniard having slowed down to collect one from an enthusiastic and patriotic marshal.

It's a scene we grew used to during the days of Ayrton Senna, a driver proudly proclaiming his love for his country, his love for his fans. However, in a sport where corporate speak rules and profuse apologies are offered in the wake - or anticipation - of the slightest gesture or rude word, such instant, genuine outpourings of emotion are not allowed.

Despite the best efforts of the cameramen and commentators, it was clear to see large gaps in the grandstands as Europe continues to suffer in the wake of the global financial crisis. Indeed, aware of the ongoing economic situation, the race winner thanked his fans for their sacrifice, spending hard-earned money to come and cheer him on.

Behind the scenes however, the stewards were investigating a possible breach of Article 43.3 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations - receiving an object after the end-of-race signal.

Officially, no further action was taken because such a move was "consistent with a previous decision made under similar circumstances". Unofficially, common sense prevailed. Can you imagine the headlines had Alonso been punished?

Consequently, there is no punishment, however, the Spaniard will be wary of receiving an object - especially his country's flag, should he reign in Spain again.
