FIA confirms 'electric' rule for pitlane in 2014

The FIA has published the Formula One technical regulations for 2014.

Amongst the many changes, which will see the introduction of 1.6 litre V6 turbo powerplants, the sport's governing body has confirmed that all cars will use electric power only in the pitlane.

"The car must be run in electric mode (no ignition and no fuel supply to the engine) at all times when being driven in the pit lane," reads rule 5.19.

Also new for 2014 is that for the first time, in addition to using KERS, whereby kinetic energy is recovered, teams will be allowed to use the energy recovered from exhaust heat.

As previously announced, and despite the protestations of the circuits, the rev limit will be 15,000 rpm, while the Motor Generator Unit Kinetic (MGUK) - KERS to you - is increased to 120kW.

Other changes of note include:

Rule 5.8 states: It must be possible for the driver to start the engine at any time when seated normally at the wheel and without any external assistance

Rule 4.1 states: The minimum weight of the car must not be less than 660kg at all times during the event. Currently the minimum weight is 640kg.

Rule 9.6.1 states: The number of forward gear ratios must be 8. Each competitor must nominate the forward gear ratios (calculated from engine crankshaft to drive shafts) to be employed within their gearbox. These nominations must be declared to the FIA technical delegate at or before the first Event of the Championship.

For 2014 only, a competitor may re-nominate these ratios once within the Championship season, in which case the original nomination becomes immediately void. Ratio re-nominations must be declared as a set and may only be effected by the substitution of change gears.

Rule 3.4.1 sees the front wing reduced from the current 1800mm width of the car to 1650mm.

The full regulations can be found here in pdf format.
