Honda: Richards giving little away

NEWS STORY
17/12/2008

Having previously poured cold water on the idea of buying Honda, a recent change in circumstances could see Prodrive boss David Richards take a fresh look at the Brackley outfit.

The withdrawal of Subaru from the World Rally Championship leaves Richards with a bit more time on his hands, since it is the Banbury-based company which prepared the legendary cars.

"I can focus now on where we want to be long term," Richards told BBC Oxford. "Who knows? That might be in Formula One," he added, teasingly.

"I don't know about Honda," he continued. "There's a new era beckoning in Formula One, with a lower cost base. No less competitive or exciting, but there is certainly an opportunity there."

According to Pitpass sources there are two possible offers, however, while the team might be picked up for a nominal amount it is the money needed to run it, and to run it successfully, that matters.

The new rules should level the playing field somewhat, while the cost reduction will also help. However, there then comes the question of an engine deal - with Ferrari thought to be the desired option, despite Prodrive's previous (F1) links with McLaren Mercedes - and sponsors.

According to sources, Richards is unlikely to risk his own money in a Honda deal, which beggars the question, whose money would he use? He has connections with Dubai but it is well known that despite appearances the country is facing financial problems and is being assisted by Abu Dhabi.

There is also talk that a number of people previously associated with Toro Rosso have been looking at the Brackley team.
