Work begins on Russian F1 track

The first stone for the new Moscow Raceway will be laid on Wednesday, as Russia finally begins the process that it hopes will see it join Singapore, Turkey, Malaysia, Korea and India on the F1 calendar.

The circuit, which has been designed by Hermann Tilke (who else?), is located in the Volokolamskoe district, around 50 miles outside Moscow.

The project, which it is estimated will cost £120m ($218), should be completed by 2010.

There have been many false starts with regards a Russian GP, one previous plan coming to a halt when the Mayor of Moscow was shot. There was also talk of a race in St Petersburg, a move favoured by Bernie Ecclestone, but not by city officials.

The project's executive director is Hans Geist, former manager at both the A1-Ring and the Bahrain track.
