In recent weeks, highly respected technical directors Ross Brawn and Pat Symonds have both been highly critical of the standard of TV broadcasting of Formula One, singling out Britain's ITV as failing to give race fans enough information and essentially giving the sport 20th century coverage.

Therefore it came as something of a surprise, to put it mildly, when the British broadcaster won the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) for its coverage of the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Quite how ITV's coverage differed from any of the other 17 Grands Prix it broadcast last year is a mystery to all, other than for the fact that it was in Hungary that Jenson Button took his first F1 victory, after five-and-a-half years of trying. Other than this, one can only assume that the award was given in recognition of the obvious partisan delight of the broadcast team at Button's win, and in particular James Allen whose cry of "yessssssssssssssssssss, yessssssssssssssssssss, go on my son!" stirred the nation.

Looking ahead to Monaco and the building anticipation of the British media, one can hardly dare to contemplate the awards and baubles to be handed out should Lewis Hamilton take his rightful place on the steps with the Grimaldi family on Sunday afternoon.

At the very least James, Steve, Martin, Mark, Ted and Louise should be looking forward to knighthoods, possibly even Canonization. Yessssssssssssssssssss!
